True nocturnal enuresis is defined by five requirements:
- Urination otherwise normal
- Functionally normal
- Occurs involuntarily while asleep
- At least four times a month
- In children over 5 years old.

If
parents find that their child’s bedwetting meets these
five requirements they should see a paediatrician, who is
the best person to deal with such cases in the first instance.
If all five requirements are not met, the problem may be
another one, which should also be dealt with by a specialist.
In any case, professional medical attention is necessary
for a proper diagnosis in order to find the most appropriate
treatment for the child’s condition.
