In
order for your doctor to be able to make a correct diagnosis,
a clinical history is essential, defining the pattern of
incontinence, a urine culture, and physical and ultrasound
examinations. The purpose of this is to ensure that no cases
of enuresis of organic origin or false enuresis are overlooked.
The causes that trigger enuresis may be organic—such
as disease of the urinary tract—or genetic. If both
of a child’s parents suffered from enuresis when children
themselves, the incidence has been estimated at 77.3 per
cent. If only one of the parents used to wet the bed as
a child, the percentage decreases significantly to 44

per
cent, but if neither of the parents has a history of bedwetting
the figure is only 15 per cent.
Other reasons for enuresis include a reduced bladder capacity,
sphincter dysfunction and extremely deep sleep.
